What’s Different in 2027

  • Five holidays fall on a weekend. 2 January, Waitangi Day, ANZAC Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day are all Mondayised (or moved to Tuesday) for most people.
  • Back-to-back long weekends in Auckland. Auckland Anniversary Day is Monday 1 February, and Waitangi Day is observed the following Monday, 8 February.
  • An early Easter. Good Friday is 26 March, so Easter lands in the first quarter. Southland’s anniversary on Easter Tuesday (30 March) makes it a five-day break there.
  • Matariki in June. Matariki is Friday 25 June, less than three weeks after King’s Birthday on 7 June.
  • Christmas moves to Monday and Tuesday. Christmas Day (Saturday) is observed on Monday 27 December and Boxing Day (Sunday) on Tuesday 28 December.

How Mondayisation Works

When Waitangi Day or ANZAC Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the holiday moves to the following Monday for anyone who doesn’t normally work that weekend day. This is called Mondayisation.

Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and 2 January work in a similar way. If one falls on a weekend and you wouldn’t normally work that day, you get the holiday on the following Monday, or the Tuesday if Monday is already a holiday.

In 2027, that applies to five holidays: 2 January (observed Monday 4 January), Waitangi Day (Monday 8 February), ANZAC Day (Monday 26 April), Christmas Day (Monday 27 December) and Boxing Day (Tuesday 28 December).

Keep Stock Moving Over the Holidays

RPC Logistics stores, picks and delivers for New Zealand brands from our Auckland warehouse. Talk to us early about holding extra stock before peak periods and booking deliveries around public holiday closures, so your customers aren’t left waiting.

Planning Freight Around Public Holidays

Public holidays change more than the calendar. Distribution centres adjust receiving hours, carriers run reduced schedules, and orders pile up either side of a long weekend. A little planning keeps stock on the shelf.

  • Book DC slots early. Supermarket and retail distribution centres often change receiving hours around Easter and Christmas, and booking windows fill quickly.
  • Build stock before long weekends. Easter is a four-day break, and demand for many products spikes in the days before it.
  • Plan for the Christmas peak. November and December are the busiest months for freight. Get stock into the warehouse before the rush, and allow extra time for inbound containers over the Christmas and New Year break.
  • Watch regional anniversary days. A delivery into Christchurch on Show Day (Friday 12 November) or into Southland on Easter Tuesday (30 March) can be held up even though the rest of the country is working.
  • Tell your customers. Publish order cut-off dates for online orders before each long weekend.
