Fuel Adjustment Factor (FAF)

The Fuel Adjustment Factor is a variable surcharge used by transport operators and freight forwarders to manage changes in the cost of diesel. Here’s our current FAF and how it’s calculated.

What Is the Fuel Adjustment Factor?

Fuel prices change daily, which can make a big difference to transport costs over time. The Fuel Adjustment Factor (FAF) lets us recover those fuel price movements fairly, without constantly changing your base transport rates.

RPC Logistics bases its FAF on the difference between the base fuel rate (NZ$1.15 per litre, excluding GST) and current diesel prices, using the FAF calculation table below. The percentage appears on transport invoices as a separate line item.

We proactively manage our FAF so customers share in any fuel cost reductions.

How FAF Works on Your Invoice

Check the fuel price

We compare the current diesel price (excluding GST) with our base fuel rate of NZ$1.15 per litre.

Find the FAF band

The FAF calculation table shows the percentage for each fuel price band.

Apply it to transport

The FAF percentage is applied to your transport charges and shown as its own line on your invoice.

Example: if diesel is $1.97 per litre (excluding GST), it falls in the $1.95 – $2.00 band, so the FAF is 14.4%. On a $200 transport charge, the FAF would be $28.80.

Because the FAF moves with the price of diesel, your base transport rate stays steady and you only pay for the fuel costs we actually face. When diesel gets cheaper, the saving flows straight through to your invoice.

How often does the FAF change?

We review the FAF as fuel prices move. When diesel prices are stable it may stay the same for months, and when prices move quickly it can change weekly. The current rate is always shown at the top of the table on this page.

Why is FAF shown as a separate line on my invoice?

Showing FAF separately keeps your base transport rate stable and makes it clear how much of your invoice relates to fuel. When fuel prices fall, the FAF line falls too.

Does the FAF go down when fuel prices fall?

Yes. RPC Logistics proactively manages its FAF so customers share in any fuel cost reductions.
